It seems like it has been forever since I have written! Life has been a little hectic and you will see why in my next posts. Sorry about the delay, but better late than never :)
Mom came to visit! So where do you go sightseeing in New England when your visitor does not care for big cities? Luckily, New England is full of small towns with interesting histories. We decided to visit Newport, Rhode Island, Salem, Massachusetts, and Plymouth, Massachusetts.
We visited The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms mansions in Newport. Touring these "summer cottages" is absolutely fantastic. It's hard to imagine that most families only spent 8-10 weeks out of the year in these homes. I think The Elms is my favorite. The owners would allow children to play in their expansive back yard, climb on their granite sculptures, and the butler would bring them milk and cookies!

We made this video for my younger brother, but it shows how massive some of the trees are.
Next we visited Salem. Honestly, Salem was a bit of a disappointment. It was interesting to learn about the witch trials, but the witch "museums" were all extremely similar and all a very far cry from being respectable museums. However, the Peabody Essex Museum was wonderful! In addition to the main museum, PEM also owns several historic homes that visitors can tour.

We ended our sightseeing adventures in Plymouth. We visited The Mayflower II, a re-creation of the original Mayflower ship the pilgrims sailed, and Plymouth Rock.

However, my favorite experience in Plymouth we discovered by pure accident. We were looking for an ice cream shop and we stumbled upon the ocean! Mom and I walked along the beach and had a close encounter with a stingray. Then we discovered a bridge/path made of huge rocks that jutted out into the ocean. It was so cool!
